Pearl Cleage’s 1994 play, Flyin’ West  is set in 1898, follows four black women as they lay claim to land in Nicodemus, an all-black Kansas town. The play is a powerful commentary on sisterhood, identity and race and is based on fact: in the late 19th century, many African Americans left the South to settle out West.

Reviews

Not only is the plot of “Flyin’ West” historically significant, but the cast is as well — it’s the first all-black cast in Pitt’s history.
