Directed Research: Theatre Arts-Austrian Puppet Theatre and Stop Motion

This course focuses on the highly respected marionette puppet theater developed throughout Central Europe and remains a world attraction in Austria.  We will use an interdisciplinary approach to trace its development from early to modern times.  This exploration will include a look at the making of the marionette with traditional materials, as well as stage and costume design.  We will also gain understanding of the role this art form has played throughout various time periods in Austrian/Central European history by looking at a range of plays specifically designed for the puppet theater, and buildings erected for these plays throughout Austria and Central Europe.  We will learn to manipulate a variety of marionette controls and stage design in order to perform one of Austria's well known plays.  Students will also have an introduction into stop motion film making using the traditional approach found in Central Europe.  This course will be great for students thinking about participating in the Comparative Healthcare in Graz summer study abroad program and for students who might have taken the Austrian Puppet Theater course.
