Global Stages -Punk Goes Global

Punk has gone global, or perhaps it has always been. From Wuhan, China to Athens, Georgia, to Belfast, Ireland, to Soweto, South Africa punk is alive and evolving. Working across multiple geographies, this course will use punk performance to map complex interplays between the Americas, Europe, Pacific Cultures, Asia, and the African Continent in relation to global processes of diaspora, adaptation, and cultural transmission. Through staged performances, music, and media, this course will explore the aesthetic ingredients, gender/sexual play, and political undercurrents raging through punk music across the globe. Projects in this course will lean into the do-it-yourself ethos of the punk scene to explore how we define and deploy "punk" for protest and/or progress. Students with all musical tastes and preferences are encouraged to participate - this is a gatekeeping-free zone.
