The Po-Hsien Chu International Scholar Award

Dr. Po-Hsien Chu was a brilliant scholar of Sinophone theater and performance, a nurturer of the field of Sinophone Studies, a generous and witty collaborator, and a punctilious teacher. Sadly Dr. Po-Hsien Chu passed away unexpectedly on February 8, 2022, he was just 35 years old.

When he unexpectedly passed away in February 2022, Dr. Chu was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Pittsburgh. In his memory and honor, his colleagues have created the Po-Hsien Chu International Scholar Award, a fund designed to support graduate students and international contingent faculty.

Caitlin Marshall, Senior Lecturer at University of Maryland writes:

''Like Po-Hsien, this award hopes to tackle structural inequities in academia, and does so by recognizing the barriers faced by students and scholars who do not hold citizenship or status as Permanent Lawful Residents in the US or Canada. To redress these inequities, the Po-Hsien Chu International scholar award will recognize students and scholars who must navigate the complexities of visa status, the contingent labor market, xenophobia, and structural racism while working to make important intellectual and artistic contributions in the fields of theatre, dance, and performance studies.

The fundraising campaign hopes to raise $50,000 to underwrite the award in perpetuity.

If you have the means, please donate and spread the word to your colleagues, friends, and communities.''
