The Brown Overcoat

A romantic comedy set in a fashionable Parisian drawing room. The play revolves around a vain and witty Countess, her somewhat pompous lover the Baron, and her flirtatious interest in a young musician across the street, George Duroi. Throughout the play, the Countess grows bored with the Baron and finds his habits— especially his constant wearing of a brown overcoat— increasingly irritating. Their exchanges about love, vanity, and boredom reveal the shallowness of their relationship. Eventually, the Countess’s attention shifts toward the young artist Duroi, symbolizing her desire for something new and more exciting.
