Kelly Trumbull

Kelly Trumbull is a Pittsburgh-based theatre artist, educator, director, actor, and playwright. She is a Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Pittsburgh and also serves on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama and School of Music.

At Pitt, Kelly teaches courses in acting, voice and movement, acting for the camera, performance pedagogy, and professional development. Her teaching and directing practice is rooted in Stanislavski-based approaches, particularly Active Analysis, and emphasizes collaboration, play, and actor agency.

As a director, Kelly has worked with City Theatre Company, Pittsburgh Playhouse, Pitt Stages, New Hazlett Theater’s CSA Series, and Resonance Works among others. Selected Pitt directing credits include Head Over Heels, Dead Man’s Cell Phone, John Proctor Is the Villain, The Wolves, and Dance Nation. As an actor, she has appeared with Pittsburgh CLO, Quantum Theatre, Pittsburgh Playhouse's REP, Bricolage, City Theatre Company, Pittsburgh Public Theater and others, as well as in film, television, and commercial projects.

Kelly’s plays include Morning Reckoning, developed and produced through the New Hazlett Theater’s CSA Series and later presented in its full-length form at Pitt Stages, and Parental Consent, which has received multiple developmental readings and was named a semifinalist for the Seven Devils Playwrights Conference. She was a member of the Pittsburgh Public Theater Playwrights Collective from 2024–2026 and is co-founder, with Pitt alum Julia Kreutzer, of Incline Theater Collaborative, which supports the development of new work by Pittsburgh playwrights.

Kelly holds a BFA in Acting from Syracuse University and an MA in Educational Theatre from New York University. She is a member of Actors’ Equity Association, SAG-AFTRA, and the Dramatists Guild.
